Synchronized swimming premiered as Olympic discipline in 1984 in Los Angeles (USA). It included only Solo and Duo events. The Spanish team was already being present and CNKallipolis already have a presence. In Atlanta (1996) there was only Team event. From Sydney (2000), there are Team and Duet events, and it was setup a preliminary qualifying tournament.
At the Olympics in China (Beijing, 2008) there were changes in the conditions of participation, which encourage participation by continent (one for each, 5 of 8 teams). The place for Europe was won by Russia (on European Cup, June 2007, Rome) and therefore Spain should win one of three places in the Pre-Olympic tournament in Beijing (16 to 20 April 2008). Of the 24 duets, 8 were distributed according to the same criteria, and the remaining 16, at the same qualifying tournament (but there must have at least one per continent)
